Saturday, April 25, 2009, 3:00 pm

We spent the morning and early afternoon preparing for our Bon Voyage party which began at 3 pm. We had been hoping for a nice day so that we could hold the festivities in our big garages, but the weather didn’t cooperate so we went to Plan B and set up the Clubhouse for the party. We were surprised and gratified by the number of people who were able to come by and spend time with us! It was a very nice little gathering. After the guests departed and family remained, we picked up the place a bit and then ordered some pizzas.

Monday, February 23, 2009 - 5:00 am

Our flight home today left at 10:50 am so we met the shuttle bus in front of the lobby at 7 am. Our travel to Minneapolis was uneventful; however we were greeted by very cold temperatures back in the Midwest; in fact, the Minneapolis area received more than 6 inches of snow over the weekend! Glad we missed that! We were in Clear Lake before 7 pm, delivered Gale and Mary to their house and then settled in to decompress at home after a wonderful few days in Mexico.

Sunday, February 22, 2009 - 6:00 am

7 am – walk. 8 am – yoga on the beach. Breakfast buffet. Beach time. Dinner at the French restaurant. Just another day in Paradise!

Saturday, February 21, 2009 - 6:00 am

Today was pretty much a repeat of yesterday with the addition of the main event we had all come to witness. The wedding took place on the beach at 3 pm and it turned out to be a very intimate and touching affair. Gale officiated at the ceremony and, some say, he missed his calling. A private reception with cocktail hour and dinner followed the ceremony. During the reception, several members of the wedding party toasted or, should I say, “roasted”, the couple and Gale even read a poem he had written for Alicia.

Friday, February 20, 2009 - 6:00 am

This morning we picked up Mark, Eric and Rita for a walk at 7am. Several family members met us on the beach at 8 am for a yoga session. What a wonderful and peaceful setting we had for our practice! Afterwards, many of us met at the breakfast buffet. Beach time followed and then dinner with the family at the Caribbean restaurant. Following dinner, the wedding party had a short rehearsal.

Thursday, February 19, 2009 - 6:00 am

We were up around 6 am to go for a nice walk and check out the two fitness facilities on the grounds. There was a small fitness center near our rooms and a larger, open-air fitness center closer to one of the other sections of the hotel grounds. Gale was denied access to the indoor facility because he didn’t have the proper footwear – his sandals were not acceptable. Maureen hopped on one of the elliptical machines while Gale went in search of tennis shoes. He found some water shoes at the gift shop that covered his feet and passed muster, however, his sandals would have been sturdier and better for a workout. Oh well, whatever it takes!! Maureen did not enjoy the elliptical machine very much because of a shorter range of motion than what she was used to so we left this facility to continue our walk and find the open-air gym. After locating the outdoor gym, Gale decided to lift weights and Maureen continued her walk. We met up again about 8 am and went to get the folks for the breakfast buffet.

This place is amazing! It is an all-inclusive resort the food and drinks at all the bars and restaurants are “free”! The property itself is beautiful, the food is fantastic and the outdoor setting couldn’t be nicer. The help is very accommodating and the weather is perfect!

Mark was able to arrange for a beachside room for Gale and Mary this morning. He and Eric got the folks settled into their new space on the ground floor. Everyone was very pleased with the move!

After breakfast we changed into our swimwear and headed for the beach. Even though the hotel complex boasts five very large and beautiful pools, we spent our afternoons on the gorgeous 2 km private beach. In the evening, we met the family for dinner at the Brazilian restaurant.

Wednesday, February 18, 2009 - 3:00 am

Our wakeup call was at 3:00 am! Since the four of us shared a room last night, Gale and Maureen got up first to take showers and pack things up. Everyone was ready in time for the hotel shuttle at 4:30 am. When we arrived at the terminal, we weren’t able to find wheelchairs right away for Gale’s parents, so they had to walk further than they were used to. It became evident that they weren’t going to make it much further on their own, so we sought more help in finding wheelchairs. There was quite a long line to check-in with the airline, but once we had wheelchairs and people to push them around, we went right to the head of the lines: the check-in line, the security checkpoint line and we were allowed to bring the folks on to the airplane first. Believe it or not, there are advantages to traveling with disabilities!

Our flight took off at 6:15 am and we arrived at the Cancun airport a few minutes before 10:00 am. Before landing, we were assured that there would be wheelchairs waiting for us since we boarded with them. Something must have been lost in translation, though, because we had to order the wheelchairs when we arrived and the four of us waited on the plane for a little while before we could disembark. As before, however, we were taken to the front of the lines (immigration and customs) and made it through the process quite efficiently. Our shuttle driver was waiting for us and we rode with one other party of 5 to get to our resort. This ride took a little over an hour – fortunately, we were dropped off at our resort before the other party. Some people spent as long as 3 hours on the shuttle because of all the people that had to be let off before them.

Upon arrival at the resort we immediately ran into Alicia and Brad with their wedding consultant. They were on their way to check out the spot where the ceremony will take place and they were looking very relaxed and happy to be here. We found ourselves, once again, searching for wheelchairs. Gale had called the hotel back in January to find out if wheelchairs would be available and, evidently, it depends on who you talk to! Some said, “No problem - We have them here.” Others said, “No, we don’t have any.” As it turned out today, there were a few on the property, but all were being used. Gale, Sr. and Mary were able to walk to the Lobby where we checked in. Our rooms weren’t quite ready for us, so we walked to one of the restaurants that was nearby, and enjoyed some lunch and cocktails. At around 2:30 pm, Gale and Maureen headed back up to the lobby to pick up the room keys and check out the accommodations. The walk there was a beautiful one, however, it was probably a good quarter of a mile trek! We knew that our parents would have difficulty making the journey once, let alone back and forth every day at least twice while we’re here! Maureen went back to the restaurant to wait with Gale, Sr. and Mary, while Gale (Jr.) tried to come up with wheelchairs. A $20 bill seemed to help, and, magically, one appeared! We used the one wheelchair to shuttle the parents to their room. Then at 5 pm, Gale (Jr) met a representative of the medical supply company in the lobby and picked up a motorized scooter for Gale Sr.’s use while at the hotel.

By late afternoon, we were in our rooms relaxing and getting changed into more appropriate vacation attire. Gale’s brother, Mark, and his friends Eric and Rita arrived during the late afternoon and Dave and Judy, the parents of the bride, showed up early evening. Mark, et al, had late reservations at one of the specialty restaurants; the parents planned to order room service; and Gale and Maureen decided to walk down to one of the buffets for dinner. It was an early night for everybody.

Tuesday, February 17, 2009 - 4:00 pm

Today we begin our Mexican vacation! It has been a long, very snowy and cold winter so far and we are more than ready to leave for a few days in the sun. Gale’s niece, Alicia, is getting married on Saturday on the beach at the resort where we are staying and Gale is to officiate at the ceremony! We are escorting Gale’s parents, Gale Sr. and Mary, on this trip and decided that it would be a good idea to travel to Minneapolis the day before we take off since our flight is at 6:15 am out of the Humphrey Terminal. We left Clear Lake about 4:00 pm and after checking into the hotel, had a nice dinner at the Applebee’s restaurant nearby.
