Today was Gale’s 55th birthday! It was a beautiful morning and with the wind at our backs (NNE 10), we enjoyed a nice trip through the Bay of Quinte to Trenton, Ontario, where we stopped at the city marina shortly after noon to make our phone call to clear customs. Coming into Trenton harbor, we noticed many white swans congregating about. We hoped to be able to get a closer look at them at some point. After inquiring at the marina, we set out on foot to find some fishing licenses, stop at the Visitors Center and pick up a few groceries. We had a very enjoyable three-hour walk and became quite familiar with the part of town we were in. We saw our first black squirrel which was quite interesting to us. Lucy received a lot of attention – we even had one lady drive around the block to come back and tell us what a beautiful dog we had! Another couple of young women stopped their vehicle to ask us what kind of dog she was. Gale had decided that the next time that happened, he would say she was a “whippet” because several people prior to this were convinced that’s what she was. The girls were surprised and said they’d never actually seen a “whippet” before and they worked at the Humane Society. Maureen got a kick out of this revelation, and told Gale that he needed to tell them the truth. We all enjoyed the joke. Lucy was allowed to go with us into most of the stores and she behaved like a well-trained working dog.

About 3:40 pm we still wanted to pick up a few items at the grocery store, but we also needed to get back to the marina to register and obtain a key for the showers before they closed the office. Gale headed for the marina and Maureen purchased the groceries. Back on the boat at 4:15, Gale was craving ice cream for his birthday dinner. They had some great choices for ice cream for sale at the marina but we needed to make our purchase before 4:30 pm so we cleared some space in our little freezer and picked out our favorites. When I mentioned to the gal scooping our ice cream that today was Gale’s birthday, she refused to take any money for the treats!
