It rained all night long and was still raining when we got up so we loaded up the laundry and supplies in plastic garbage bags and hauled things over to the laundry room. While Maureen did the clothes, Gale performed his normal maintenance checks getting ready to cruise. Since it was the Labor Day holiday, the marina restaurant was open for business and blueberry pancakes sounded like a good idea. The restaurant was busy when we finally took a table at about 10:15 am, but we didn’t mind waiting. In fact, while Maureen sat at the table and ordered coffee, Gale was able to get his shower in and come back before the waitress even made it back to take our breakfast order. The blueberry pancakes, omelet, hash browns and toast we shared were fantastic and since it was after 11 am when we left the diner, we were good to go for the rest of the afternoon.
The rain continued as we threw off the dock lines just before noon and made our way towards Bay Springs Lake. The temperature was in the lower 60’s which was a welcome change even if we had to put on long pants, raingear and real shoes. It seemed very unusual to be the only boat out on what should have been a very busy holiday on the water. The rain did begin to let up a bit in the afternoon, although it didn’t stop completely until sometime Monday night. All in all, we received between 6 and 9 inches of rain in about 36 hours. Places further south had more like 12 to 15 inches. Fortunately, the water levels were not affected much where we were and we did not have to worry about our mast hitting the 52-foot fixed clearance bridges.
Just before 6 pm, we nosed the bow up on a little sand beach and tied the bow anchor around a tree. We were very protected from the wind and rested easily all night.
