We borrowed the marina’s courtesy vehicle to pick up groceries and run a few errands before heading out again. At 12:15 pm, we pulled away from the dock and began our trek up the river. It was a little bumpy passing through a few miles of Mobile Bay from the marina, but as we entered the mouth of the Mobile River, the waves calmed down and we enjoyed a wonderful sail northward even as we pushed against the current. We experienced SSE winds between 10 and 22 knots for the entire afternoon.
We encountered a bit of a hold up at the railroad swing bridge known as “14-mile Bridge.” Here we had to wait 1-1/2 hours to allow the workers to finish some bridge repairs and then for the train to pass over. As we waited, the engine was in neutral or at idle speed and the wind continued to push us upstream against a 2-knot current.
Finally after clearing the bridge, we traveled the remaining few miles to Big Bayou Canot where we found a nice anchorage for the night.
