Tues, Aug 30 to Sat, Sept 3, 2011 – Waterfall Cove aka Cooper Hollow

At 5 pm on Tuesday, we left AYHM and motored the five miles to Waterfall Cove arriving just after Life’s 2 Short had settled into their spot on the beach. It had been a very hot several days and this one was no different with temperatures approaching the 100 degree mark.

Bud or “Iceman” as he is fondly nicknamed, stopped by on his pontoon our first evening at the falls. He offered to bring the pontoon back in another day or so to use it as “the patio” between boats over the weekend, Another friend of ours, Dave Harris, of m/v Moonstruck, arrived at the anchorage on Wednesday afternoon. We had met Dave the last time we were in Demopolis. He anchored his boat right behind Life’s 2 Short When Bud brought his pontoon out on Friday, we rafted together which made it possible to travel from our boat to the pontoon and over to L2S and Moonstruck. Other smaller boats rafted up with us during the days and, at times, we had as many as six or seven boats in our little flotilla.

Most mornings were spent relaxing and keeping cool inside our boats. The afternoons were dedicated to relaxing and keeping cool – mostly in the water. We watched boats come and go; cheered for those jumping off the waterfall; visited with many new friends and helped spill a little beer and wine with the best of them. The evenings found us on the beach around some very large and impressive campfires.

On Friday evening, Todd, Brenda, Dave, Gale and Maureen used Bud’s pontoon to take him home and then return to the anchorage so we could continue to use his boat as our patio. It was a lovely night and a nice ride on the moonlit water. After arriving at Bud’s boat house, his neighbor came up to him saying she was very worried about her husband, J.C., who had left the house a few hours earlier to check on a boat. She had fallen asleep and realized that he had been gone all of this time and was concerned that something had happened to him. As it turned out, we found JC floating face down in the water near the boat in the canal. We never learned the official cause of death, but we were going on the assumption that it was a stroke or heart attack.

On Friday and Saturday nights, we shared the beach with three 50-foot houseboats. We even watched a little Saturday evening football on their “big screen” projection TV. The screen was mounted outside on the pilot house and it was a treat to sit by the fire and watch the game.

During our days at the beach, Gale honed his bass fishing skills and brought home some fabulous fresh fish to share. Once he got the hang of it, there was no stopping him!
