Friday, October 1, 2010 – Potomac Creek

Gale needed to be at the marina at 8:30 am to drop off a propane tank that one of the marina employees had offered to exchange for him. She would be going to Home Depot but wouldn’t be back until 1 pm. That worked fine for us since we were planning to leave at low tide anyway (around 1:30 pm) and ride the outgoing tide back down the river. After Gale dropped off the tank, he did some other chores while ashore; such as, finding the post office to mail a package and getting some cash from the ATM before returning to Blue Heron. At 11:30 am, we made a fuel run to the James Creek Marina which was about 2 miles from our anchorage. By 2:15 pm, we were fueled up, had picked up the propane tank and were on our way down the Potomac River.

The north northwest wind and the tide combined to give us a great sail. We were hoping to meet up with Tom and Kris on Polar Pacer whom we had met at the Capitol Yacht Club. They hailed from Toronto and their boat was a small catamaran. They left over two hours before us and decided to anchor at Potomac Creek for the night after determining that the first anchorage choice in Mattawoman Creek was getting pounded by waves. Of course, that meant we had to go a little further on down the line to meet them, and even though it was close to sunset when we were traveling past Mattawoman Creek, we decided to go all the way. We had our previous track to follow and it was a nice enough evening for one of us to stand out on the foredeck with a flashlight to watch for crab pots. It was slow going after dark, but we made it safely to Potomac Creek and anchored in the same spot as we had on our way upriver. It was 9:15 pm by the time we set the anchor – a little too late to get together that evening.
