Thursday, September 30, 2010 – Washington Channel, Washington, DC

Wow! The weather report was correct – it rained hard last night and the wind came up. It was still raining in the morning, but every so often it would let up with just some sprinkles for a few minutes before more serious rainfall. We were trying to time our dinghy ride in to the marina during those “sprinkling events” and tote our laundry and computers in between the heavier rains.

It was close to 11 am before we made a run for the dock. Several others had decided that it would be a good day to do laundry so we had to wait a bit for machines. It didn’t matter much, though, since we had brought our laptops with us and could get busy on those while we waited. At one point during the afternoon, the dockmaster came into the community room wondering if anyone owned a boat called “N-Aimless.” A man working on a laptop near us claimed ownership and the dockmaster said, “You’re dragging anchor and headed for C Dock!” The man called for his wife and they were out the door and into their dinghy in a flash. Their big sailboat was being blown about by the wind as though it didn’t even have an anchor down! Fortunately they were able to get aboard their boat and start the engine just before it crashed into a luxury motor yacht at the end of D Dock. They must have been doing something right that day not to have caught any other boat’s anchor, hit a dock or run into a boat in a slip!

About the time we finished our laundry, it quit raining. We took advantage of the change in the weather and got everything back on the boat in good shape. At 3:30 pm, we headed back to shore once again and walked to the grocery store to pick up a few more items. We had been invited over to Jim and Deb’s boat for Jim’s “famous” crab cakes tonight and wanted to bring some salads as our contribution to the meal. As always, the food was fantastic and we had a great time visiting. At the end of the evening we felt very lucky that it was not raining when we got back into the dinghy for the ride out to Blue Heron.
