Today we traveled the 46-mile Canal Section of the Tenn-Tom Waterway which consists of six dams and pools connected to form a 9 foot deep waterway along a canal. We met Twice ‘S Nice just before 8 am as we were entering the first lock of the day, the Jamie Whitten Lock. The Whitten Lock has the largest lift (84 feet) of any lock and dam on this waterway and it has the third largest lift East of the Mississippi River.

We expected to have to share the locks with other cruisers as the power boaters caught up with us today. As it turned out, the only lock we shared was the fifth one, Wilkins Lock, when a large power boat zoomed by us as we were approaching the lock. We heard both the nearby marina and the lockmaster try to hail this boat and tell them to slow down!

The total drop today after six locks was 224 feet. We cleared the sixth lock, Amory Lock, at 4:30 pm and continued another five miles to the anchorage in the channel in the Tombigbee River, mile 366.3. Paul and Sue came over to our boat for cocktails before dinner and we shared a beautiful sunset with them in this peaceful place.
