Thurs, Feb 18, 2010 - Key West, FL

The waves made a lot of noise last night as they slapped up against the hulls of the boat. It seemed like it was noisiest toward the stern where our guests were trying to sleep so their first night on the boat could not have been very restful. We assured Joel and Mary that not all of our nights were like that one and promised to find quieter and more peaceful places to anchor during their visit.

After some breakfast and a little conversation, we moved the boat in closer to the marina and anchored in the same spot off the channel as yesterday. Again, we didn’t want to have to take the dinghy all the way out to the far reaches of the mooring field with the wind and waves coming at us – especially, since we were planning to spend the day provisioning and hoped to avoid having all of our groceries awash with seawater before bringing them aboard. By noon, Joel, Mary, Gale, Maureen and Lucy were at the dinghy dock and ready to walk. The first stop was the marina office where we paid for another night on the mooring ball. The guys and gals parted ways here with Joel, Gale and Lucy headed west towards town and Mary and Maureen walking east to the Winn-Dixie grocery store. The guys were charged with picking up Gale’s prescription at Walgreens, some rum and vodka from the liquor store, a fishing license for Joel and ice for the cooler. The girls’ mission was food for the week. After the groceries were purchased, a cab was called to take the women and the provisions back to the dinghy dock. The girls called the guys and learned they had stopped by Sloppy Joe’s for a beer but were ready to make the walk back to the dock. After everyone was back together, the dinghy was loaded up and Gale, Lucy and Maureen hauled things out to Blue Heron while Joel and Mary picked up a fishing license and some ice. Gale went back for the rest of the crew and we were all on board by 4 pm.

Brad and Alicia called to see if we could meet them for the “Celebration of the Sunset” at Mallory Square for their last night in Key West. If it hadn’t been so windy and wavy, we would have gladly joined them, however, with the north wind forecasted to build back up to 15 knots, we decided it was better to move the boat back out to the mooring ball and stay put. After a nice meal of grilled potatoes and chicken breast, everyone was ready to call it a day. We needed a good night’s rest for our planned trip to the Marquesas Keys and Dry Tortugas tomorrow.
