Monday, August 30, 2010 - Great Wicomico River near Heathsville, VA
Before heading out, Gale wanted to spend a little more time with Sandy to see what he had done in the large forward locker where the holding tank had been removed. Sandy hadn’t yet figured out how to put his new dinghy up on davits and they were currently towing it behind the big boat so he picked Gale up and they spent a few minutes throwing ideas around. At 10:30 am both Blue Heron and Lilly Pad motored away from the anchorage. We traveled together for a few hours but parted ways when we headed towards the Great Wicomico River and Sandy and Nancy made their way to Solomons Island, Maryland.
We were on our way to visit our friends, Don and Alice Imbur, who we met on the “Loop” at the free dock in Ottawa, Illinois last summer. Don and Ally have a home on Tipers Creek near Wicomico Church, Virginia, and they had invited us to come and see them when we made it to their neck of the woods. And, as we would soon discover, they were truly out in the woods!
Don had suggested that we anchor in Horn Harbor for the night where we would be well protected from the weather. Before stopping, we thought we would motor up Tipers Creek to see if we could figure out which place was Don and Ally’s. We wove our way back into a very protected waterway and noticed only one dock without a boat – and it looked like it was made for a catamaran. We motored back out into the main river and found a spot out in the open near the highway bridge. We were hoping to find a bit of a breeze since the temperature was in the mid-90’s and it was very still. As we watched the sunset over the bridge, we were treated to a bit of a show by a guy in a motor-driven kite.
