Thursday, September 2, 2010 – Jennings Boatyard, Cockrell Creek on Great Wicomico River
It’s Hurricane Earl Day! The storm was threatening the outer banks of N Carolina and they still were unable to forecast its path. We left the dock at 7:25 am and made it to Jennings Boatyard in Cockrell Creek just before 9 am. We were “on the hard” by 9:30 am and busy making hurricane preparations. We decided not to take the sails off and simply tied them down as best we could. We removed canvas, tied the dinghy down to the foredeck, brought in cushions, the dinghy motor, and anything else that was loose. We felt we had done all we could by 11:30 am so we called Don and he picked us up at the yard and brought us back to their house.
After a nice lunch, Don and Ally were kind enough to take us shopping. We needed to provision the boat so that we would be able to leave from the boatyard after the storm. We stopped at WalMart and the grocery store, dropped everything off at the boat and were back at Don and Ally’s by late afternoon. There were no other chores – and the only thing left to do was enjoy a wonderful evening with friends. Don and Ally had graciously offered us their guest room for the night. The storm was expected to hit around 3 am.
