Thursday, September 9, 2010 – Annapolis, MD

It was a very chilly morning! We actually were cold last night and needed a blanket. Ever since we got back on the boat in Stuart, we had used only a sheet to cover ourselves at night. It felt good to put on a jacket!

We spent the day in downtown Annapolis. When we pulled up to the dinghy docking area, we noticed a dinghy with an Iowa registration, and the designation T/T Cloverleaf. We had seen the trawler, Cloverleaf, out where we had anchored and hoped that we would catch the owners as they got back in their dinghy so we could introduce ourselves.

We toured the Maryland State House which is the oldest state capitol still in continuous legislative use and is the only state house to have ever served as the nation’s capitol. It was where George Washington resigned his commission as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army and the Treaty of Paris was ratified, marking the official end of the Revolutionary War. From there, we walked over to the Naval Academy to see the inside of the Cathedral. We tagged along with a tour-in-progress and followed them into the crypt where John Paul Jones’ body rests. After a little walk around the campus, we walked back to the downtown area and did a little shopping. Late in the afternoon, we stepped into the bar where we had enjoyed a great happy hour on a previous trip to Annapolis.

On our way back to the boat, we decided to hail the folks on Cloverleaf as we dinghied by. They were home and welcomed us aboard. We met Dave and Bev Feiges, originally from Sioux City, Iowa, who live aboard their boat full time. They told us that life is actually much easier not having a home port – they are always at home and never have to “go back” to a certain place for anything. If they need to visit family, they just make arrangements for their boat wherever they are and figure things out from there. They turned us on to the Seven Seas Cruising Association and a couple of great web sites for long-term cruisers.
