We decided to explore the town on foot today. We dinghied to the Holiday Inn dock where we could tie up for $2 a day. It was about a mile walk into town, but it was a very scenic walk. We checked out the old clam processing plant which is now a part of the Calvert Marine Museum and learned about this labor intensive work and how the clamming industry had declined since the 1950’s. Compared to that time, the clam population is down to about 2% of what it once was. The drastic change is due both to over-harvesting and to disease introduced by European and Asian clams.

After learning about clamming, we walked along the river boardwalk, had some ice cream and headed back taking a little different route through a more residential area. We paused at an old cemetery and read some of the headstones. Then it was a stop at the market for a few things we wanted to bring to our friends’ boat for dinner tonight and back home to prepare a salad.

We had a great time aboard Freedom. Jim and Deb had set out lines with chicken for bait trying to catch a few Maryland blue crabs. We had three “keepers” for the pot and Jim cooked them up in his pressure cooker for hors d’oeuvres. They were great! Our dinner of flank steak and tortellini was even better! During our meal, we had left the crab lines out and pulled in three more nice crabs we hoped to keep alive until tomorrow.
