Sailing back across Lake Michigan to Port Washington, WI, was on a due west heading. On Tuesday evening we listened to the VHF marine weather forecast. If the winds were not out of the west, we could make the crossing in 14 hours. However, the winds were predicted to shift westerly at noon on Wednesday so we decided to make a nighttime crossing. Bob is an experienced sailor and he and Gale have sailed together many times so making a night crossing with an experienced crew was not a concern. We departed Pentwater, Michigan, at 11 pm on Tuesday night, sailed all night and reached Port Washington, Wisconsin, at 2 pm on Wednesday. The men took turns at the helm with the second man on lookout, and the third sleeping for a few hours. Bob and Phil really enjoyed the opportunity to make a night crossing so Gale obliged them by giving them his shift in the cockpit. The stars shone brightly in the center of Lake Michigan and the sail was very quiet with moderate winds.
After arriving in Port Washington, we all rested for a few hours then took Blue Heron back out to do some salmon fishing. The evening’s highlight was when Susie hooked an 18-lb King Salmon. She played the fish like a pro and the fish gave her one heck of a fight. After Bob landed Susie’s catch, we headed in with the fish and one very happy girl.
No baby yet.
